The Chadron Public Library Enjoys Successful Year
The Chadron Public Library enjoyed a very successful and exciting year. Listed below are just a few of the many accomplishments your library enjoyed.
The Chadron Public Library was recognized by the Nebraska Library Commission as one of sixteen public libraries to be accredited at the "Excellence" level. This is the highest accreditation level a library can receive in Nebraska. There are 273 public libraries in Nebraska.
The Library also upgraded its integrated library system, allowing library patrons to access the Library's catalog online. In addition, library users can view book covers and read reviews for most titles listed in the Library's online catalog. The Library added three new electronic databases; Ebsco Auto Repair Reference Center, Ebscohost Business Elite and Encyclopedia Britannica. Downloadable eAudio Books will be available in the New Year.
The Chadron Public Library enjoyed more than 50,000 visitors this past year. 53,488 items were borrowed from the Library. More than 10,000 visitors utilized one of the Library's ten new public Internet computers. In addition, the Library continues to offer free wireless internet connectivity.
The library added more than 4,900 new books this past year and increased the total collection to 37,494 items.
The library also offered a host of new programs for both children and adults. More than 5,000 children and adults attended Library programs this past year. C.J. Box and Craig Johnson, national best selling authors, were guest speakers. Local authors Ed Hughes and Dr. James Hanson also spoke at the Library. Film festivals were offered for both adults and children and the Library also hosted monthly book discussions.
For the first time ever, the Library created an Adult Summer Reading Program. As always, the library enjoyed offering crafts, storytimes and special programs as part of the annual Children's Summer Reading Program.
The Library also opened its newly remodeled Teen Room. New programs for teens were offered at the Library this past year. Teens enjoyed watching football games and playing video games on the new television, reading one of the many new graphic novels and participated in the Library's Annual Teen Read Week Celebration.
The Chadron Public Library Foundation's/CSC annual play performance was attended by more than 1,000 children this past year. The Library Foundation also awarded two scholarships to Dawes County graduating seniors.
